RELIEF GOODS are exempted from payment of port charges.
To encourage, facilitate and fast-track the delivery of immediate aid to calamity-stricken areas in the country, the Cebu Port Authority has waived the collection of port charges from shipments of relief goods.
During its regular board meeting on November 12, 2013, the Cebu Port Commission approved CPA Board Resolution No. 238-2013 exempting from port charges donations of food, medicines, canned goods, drinking water, used clothing, tents, blankets, oil stoves and other items of daily use intended for calamity victims beginning October 15, 2013.
The resolution came at the heel of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that shook the province of Bohol and its neighboring provinces on October 15, 2013 and more recently, the super typhoon, Yolanda (Haiyan), on November 8, 2013 that brought massive destruction and loss of lives in the islands of Samar and Leyte including northern Cebu.
To prove that the said shipments are intended for relief aid, the goods' destination must be to a province where a barangay, sitio, municipality or city is suffering from an actual and recent emergency or disaster caused by fire, flood, typhoon, earthquake, epidemic or other calamity.
The shipper need only to present sufficient proof to the satisfaction of the CPA Port Management Office (PMO) that such will be given to the calamity-stricken area.
The same resolution likewise authorizes the refund of port charges that were paid for relief goods beginning October 15, 2013, subject to the presentation of the same requirements.
The same action was also taken by CPA in response to past calamities that behooved affected provinces in the nation.
CPA has decided to forego its Christmas Party to use the fund to buy water, bread, biscuits and canned goods. Employees will be conducting relief operations at the Port of Sta. Fe in Bantayan Island, Cebu. We welcome individual contributions of used clothing and additional relief goods.
You may drop them off at the CPA Main Bldg. on or before Friday, Nov. 15, 2013. For used clothing, please label your packages with the GENDER and AGE of intended recipients. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.
