October 6, 2013. Port users and stakeholders from the shipping line, cargo-handling and dockworkers sectors at the Port of Cebu kicked off the Duwa sa Pantalan 2013 with a backyard fun run at the Baseport.
The Cebu United Port Stakeholders Sports Association (CUPSSA) is a newly-organized association of cargo handling service providers (CHSPs) and shipping companies, particularly those operating within the area of responsibility of the CPA Port Management Office-2, along with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Bureau of Quarantine.
CUPSSA was born on August 23, 2013 after Mr. Hipolito P. Arciaga, Jr., Operations Manager of Cebu Integrated Arrastre (CIA), and Mr. Roy Richard M. Ruiz, General Manager of Puerto Servicio de Cebu, Inc. (PSCI) conceptualized the idea of holding a sports festival among the various organizations of port users in Cebu to demonstrate the significance of friendship, camaraderie, sportsmanship and unity among the different stakeholders in the port community,
Dubbed as “Duwa sa Pantalan” in the entire Baseport of Cebu, the holding of the sportsfest was unanimously approved on mass motion during the first Special Meeting of the association’s interim members on August 23, 2013 at the new PMO-2 Conference Room, 5th Street, Port Area, Cebu City.
Its roster of membership include the Oriental Port and Allied Services Corp. (OPASCOR), Cebu Integrated Arrastre (CIA), United South Dockhandlers, Inc. (USDI), Metro Cebu Arrastre and Stevedoring Services, Inc. (MCASSI), Cebu Arrastre and Stevedoring Services Corp. (CASSCOR), Puerto Servicio de Cebu, Inc.(PSCI), 2GO Group, Inc., Gothong Southern Shipping Lines, Inc., NMC Container Lines, Inc., Lorenzo Shipping Corporation, Ocean Transport Group of Companies, Oceanic Container Lines, Inc., Roble Shipping, Inc., Phil. Span Asia Carrier Corporation (PSACC), Lite Shipping Corporation, CPA, PCG and the Bureau of Quarantine.
Playing under the theme, “Duwa Para Sa Panaghiusa Sa Pantalan”, this year’s line-up of games are volleyball, badminton, tennis (lawn and table), chess, dart, 100-meter Track and the fun run that was held during its launching on October 6, 2013.
In the men’s division, Vincent Hiroo Hermosilla (CPA) crossed the finish line first with a time of 12:42 minutes followed by Edwin Colina (Bureau of Quarantine) with a time of 13:30 minutes and Anthony Uy (CIA) with 13:42 minutes, respectively.
In the women’s division, Rosamonisa Asis came to the finish line first with 17:42 minutes followed by Pearlie Navaja with 18:50 minutes and Sheila Modequillo (CPA) with 19:00 minutes, respectively.
A warm-up and a cool down “Zumba” exercise was performed by the runners before and after the fun run. An estimate of 538 registered runners joined the said running event.
Florence Villaflor of Phil. Span Asia Carrier Corporation won the title of “Miss Mutya sa Pantalan 2013”. Miss Villaflor was awarded with a trophy, bouquet of flowers and a sash.
The launching of the Duwa sa Pantalan 2013 culminated in a “budol fight” where the Cebuano favorite lechon (roasted pig) and puso (rice cooked inside coconut fronds) were thrown onto rows of makeshift tables at the CPA parking lot for everyone to gobble up for breakfast.
